Getting to Know Alonzo Saclag

The life of Saclag

Alonzo Saclag, a Filipino musician and dancer, was born in 1942 and is a member of the Kalinga people. Born in Lubuagan, he taught himself traditional Kalinga music and dance movements. Saclag revived the Kalinga gong tradition and lobbied for the conversion of the Capitol Building into a museum. He promoted Kalinga culture in schools, promoting children wearing traditional clothing and teaching folk songs. He was awarded the National Living Treasures Award in 2000 and established a village in Awichon to promote Kalinga culture

CONTRIBUTION

He lobbied that the abandoned Capitol Building be turned into a museum, schools implementing the practice of donning Kalinga costumes for important events, and that traditional Kalinga music should be alongside contemporary music in the local radio station.

Helps to preserve and continuously promote Kalinga culture through music, dances, Kalinga musical instruments, and costumes.

Established his own village in Labugan called Awichon village, it is a place where one could experience Kalinga's rich culture.

Founder of the Kalinga Budong Dance Troupe that tours around the globe to represent and introduce Kalinga performing arts.

Saclag received the National Living Treasures Award in 2000. By 2016, he had developed Awichon, a village within his town dedicated to promoting Kalinga culture to visitors.
